Urgent Action Needed to Support Annette Street Bike Lane

October 16, 2008

Yesterday, TCAT News reported on the disappointing defeat for bike lanes at last week's Public Works and Infrastructure Committee
meeting. Cycling advocates from a broad range of groups have been
working hard in the past few days, trying to find out what can done to
continue pushing for the full bike lane on Annette Street - instead of sharrows - and reverse the committee's decision when it goes to City Council for approval on October 29-30.

The message advocates are hearing is that City Council needs
to hear from cyclists in the next few days if there is any chance to
turn around this decision. It's important that this bike lane project
go through, in order to maintain a strong precedent that bicycling is
valued and that Council can make tough decisions in order to protect
the safety of cyclists.

Please take a moment to follow the instructions below and voice your
support. It's especially important that write in if you live in Ward 13 Parkdale-High Park.

  1. Send an email, before October 22, to Marilyn Toft mtoft@toronto.ca. Marilyn is Manager of Council Secretariat Support.
  2. Please CC Adrian Heaps councillor_heaps@toronto.ca, David Miller mayor_miller@toronto.ca, your local councillor (find their email address by clicking here, and bikes@world19.com
  3. Make the subject line: "2008 Bikeway Network Program - Annette Street" (as per the staff report heading)
  4. At the start of your email, indicate you are writing in reference to item number PW19.8.
  5. Please do not send your letter as an attachment.
  6. Request that the clerk's office forward your letter electronically
to all councillors, so they will directly receive an email copy as well
as in the Council agenda package.
  7. If you must send by fax, the number is 416.392.2980. Send to the
attention of Marilyn Toft and note on your cover page that your letter
is for the Council agenda re: PW19.8.

Thanks to members of ARC and World 19 for passing on the information.

A city where cycling and walking are safe and enjoyable is a great place to live!
